Aaliyah - “At Your Best You Are Love” (from Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number)

A one-shot from the i-tunes list, hidden between A.C. Newman and Abner Jay. Some songs take the listener back to a specific experience, memory markers that remind us that something significant, some love or fight, happened this certain way at this certain time. And some songs, in less than five minutes, express an entire emotional history gone apocryphal. Vestiges to remind us who we used to be before we changed. There is no specificity. Only glimpses, impressions, feelings.

“At Your Best You Are Love” is one of those songs for me. A midnight i-tunes purchase to try and grasp the purity and the pettiness of my life. It is undoubtedly one of the sweetest songs ever performed.

Acid House Kings - Assorted Songs

When I was given this little selection of numbers - “This Heart Is a Stone,” “Do What You Wanna Do,” “Keep Your Love,” “Sunday Morning” - from an assortment of LP’s, EP’s and singles, I had no preconceptions. Going by their name, I expected something along the lines of Queens of the Stone Age meets Manchester’s Happy Mondays. Obviously, the name of the band is ironic.

The music from this Swedish looking coed band (they are in fact from Sweden, I just learned) is an urbane and modern completion of a thought begun by 60’s Brit-pop bands the Zombies (though less spookily so) and the Hollies. Maximized, mostly upbeat pop with periodic minor key awareness of melancholy and ache. I like the Acid House Kings, though it seems they are barely there. They are melodic, lyrically witty, adept on the instruments they play, and their music is the exact opposite of what I would want pounding out of my Dae Woo Leganza down Ala Moana Boulevard. I think they’re all right, but what do I know? When I played my favorite song (“Sunday Morning”) for a friend, she said it was “fucking boring.”

Acker Bilk - Stranger on the Shore

Another one-shot, this one cribbed from my dad’s i-tunes playlist. If you are like Don Draper, and find yourself drunk on the beach at night with your lies made apparent by the light of the full moon, this is the song for you. Or if you just want to feel drunk at night at the beach with your lies made apparent by the light of the moon, this song will get you there. Greatest clarinet instrumental of all time.
